What is CAD?

The abbreviation CAD stands for Computer Aided Design. CAD includes tasks concerning design, construction, planning, and improvement/modification of products, which are carried out with the help of a computer and special software. Geometric models are created/modified, calculations are made or simulations are created. Everything from design to transfer to manufacturing or production are important parts of the design process.
One can distinguish between simple 2D drawings and complex 3D models.

We encounter CAD or CAD systems in many branches of engineering. They are mainly used by architects, engineers, draftsmen and/or designers.
Due to the use of CAD systems, construction drawings or blueprints are hardly ever created by hand these days.
